Lifting Mechanism for Block with ring at top

I have to make a lifting mechanism to lift a 100 gram block to a height of 0.5 metres (50 cm) and release it there on a platform. The block has a ring at its top to help in lifting (non magnetic material). Any suggestions?

does it need to be automatic? remote control? hand driven?

perhaps a robot crain like device
