Attaching wheels to DC motors, the non-permanent way
« on: February 13, 2008, 06:01:55 AM »
Hi! I'm Richard, new guy around ;D. I've been playing with electronics and microcontrollers for about a year, but I never actually built anything mechanical, or moving, for that matter.

Recently i've bought some wheels and i've done some dumpster diving, where i've got a bunch of motors (mostly tape-recorder type). I'm thinking of a method of attachingthe wheels to the motors, but I can't find any. The main site suggested using superglue, but I intend to use the wheels and motors at some later point.

I also think that at I'll use some reduction mechanism, since these little guys spin fast, but have little torque. So I'll probably wnat to use the reduction mechanism too, which are not really cheap.

Anyway, can anyone point me to some graphics explaining how to fasten wheels to a spinning axle? (either from a motor, a reduction, or anything else that will make the axle turn) ? I can't figure it out by myself.

attach a hub like this to the wheel

then just attach the hub to the shaft of the motor
Check out the Roboduino, Arduino-compatible board!

a common name for the reduction is a gearbox.
you can get a dual motor gearbox for under $15. and it comes with the motors

i made my own rough gearbox almost for free from a toy at a thrift store that cost 50 cents plus some lego gears, it can easily attach to lego wheels.
Robots are awesome!
