Title: Automated assembly line

So I will be designing pretty much a pick and place automated assembly line for a process at my friends company and am trying to decided between PLC and micro controllers, I'm very familiar with PLC programing but not installation, and very familiar whit micro controller and less familiar with the programing but i can get by.

The assembly line will 2 robot arms, 1 to pick up sheet metal and place it in a hydraulic press, the other arm will pick up the place from the other side and put it into 2 different cutters then into a stack. pretty much just pick and place the whole time.

Any suggestions

I'd say go with PLC, as programming will be the biggest trouble with a robotic arm.

What sensor suites do you plan to use?

Are there physical space, cost, or power constraints?

Part of me says stick to what you know . . .

I like microcontrollers because on mobile robots I always have cost/space/weight/power constraints.

And there will always be a microcontroller somewhere in the loop no matter what robot you do. But you probably want a PC so that you can monitor the automation remotely for failures, etc.
