That device is made with a sharp rangefinder. You will see an implementation for this as an upgrade of the $50 robot, I think that admin used an atmega8 with it.It can easily be modified to do a 360 sweep, as long as clicking here it goes forwards then backwards again otherwise the wires would get tangled
