Types of steering for a racing robot
« on: April 16, 2013, 04:09:49 AM »
Hi,

We are constructing an autonomous robot that has to navigate a maze as fast as possible. The maze will include 180 degree turns and the width of the maze is much larger than the robots size.

We have two RC Servos which can be modified to be general motors. We have an issue with deciding which type of steering will be the best for this application: car (akerman) steering, differential steering or tank steering.

We are looking for a solution which is the fastest and the easiest to build.

Thanks :) ;) ;D

For 180 degree turns in a maze, it's probably best to be able to turn directly about the Y axis, so a couple of powered wheels and a caster is probably best.
You can still do a lot with a small brain.
