Don't buy a TQFP package unless you have a pcb suitable for surface mounting.
For the 50$ 'bot you want a PDIP package like this: >CLICKY< (http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=ATMEGA328P-PU-ND)

My son is trying to build the $50 tutorial robot. This is the second attempt at trying to build something, so i am hoping to use parts from the first attempt. Does anyone know if the servos in the parts list can be substituted with a Spektrum DSP75? i already have four of those for use.

yeah those should work. you can substitute the servos in the parts list for almost any hobby servos. i have used some futabas and Mysteries and they have been fine.
