Hi All,
I'm interested in buying some muscle wire but have no idea where.
I read Admins tutorial but its not complete(>:() so I want to test its dynamics myself.
Electrically operated muscle wire is probably the best for robotics.
Also any schematics for wiring would be greatly appreciated.

There really aren't any schematics for it, just put a voltage through the wire and it will shrink ;D

Hi,
I'm interested in buying some muscle wire but have no idea where.
Look here then (http://www.google.com/search?num=100&hl=en&safe=off&rls=com.microsoft%3A*%3AIE-SearchBox&rlz=1I7GGLJ_en&q=nitinol+wire+price&aq=f&aqi=g1&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=)
Electrically operated muscle wire is probably the best for robotics.
Is there any other kind?

:-[ Oops, thought that they were operated with other energy too...
Thanks for the links!

Well, it's operated by heat (by sending a current through it, it heats up), so if you heated it with some other means, it would work as well, but let me rephrase... All the kinds of muscle/memory wire I know of is heat operated and the easiest way to heat a wire is to send a current through it.
When using it, remember that it needs to cool down to "reload" and it is quite slow, so if you need as much speed as possible, use several thinner wires separated by air (or even forced convection).

hello
Well, if you want some inexpensive stuff, here it is!

5' roll from Amazon (not where you thought you might find this stuff huh?)

Hi,
5' roll from Amazon (not where you thought you might find this stuff huh?)
I am aware of their wire, but sadly, they don't ship anything but books and CD/DVDs to Denmark :(
I had a lot of fuzz when ordering two USB microscopes from them - had to order them to a girlfriend who lives in NC and she had to bring an extra suitcase (mostly due to package materials) on her following trip to DK.
Gee, I'd understand that policy if it was serious high technology, but a piece of wire... *doh*
Anyway... 0.0015" Diameter? that won't make but a butterfly wing flap - too bad they didn't spec'd it out completely.
-
well, since its so cheap, just tripple or quadruple it up!
go clump 10 together. thats the beauty.
Also once you need high diameters of wire, keep in mind the amount of amperage needed can get pretty high.

I buy my Muscle Wire from www.robotshop.com (http://www.robotshop.com) . They have been very fast and they have a great selection of wire diameters. I am using the Muscle Wire Project book and I think they carry all the wire diameters that are used in the book. :)

like razor concepts says, unitednuclear.com is one of the best. Fast shipping too (i've done alot of business with them)
specific link: http://unitednuclear.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=28_42 (http://unitednuclear.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=28_42)
keep in mind that you can need amperes worth of electricity for stronger lifting (an ampere every kilo) and it heats up ALOT
