Title: HELP If anyone can help me with microcontrollers for my first robot. I need HELP
Post by: Elijah5647 on July 17, 2010, 03:01:30 AM
HI All

I am a young teenager who needs help choosing and using a microcontroller for my first robot.
I have all the other components for the $50 robot but am stuck for the microcontroller. Which one to choose that is under $50??

Help

Thanks
Very amateur Robotisist

Most microcontrollers are under $10...
The ATmega 8, which was used for the $50 robot, is available from many suppliers(Google ATmega8)
Have you got the electrical components ready to solder?
Or do you want to buy a pre-made microcontroller?
If you want a pre-made microcontroller most SoR members suggest the AXON or Arduino.
If you want to make your own microcontroller just follow the $50 robot tutorial, it's pretty straight forward.
Use the ATmega 8 for the $50 robot, upgrade to 168 or 328 later!

HI Thanks a lot. ;D
I don't think I am brave enough to build my own so I will go with the pre-made ATmega 8.
Thanks again
I will start making my $50 robot as soon as possible

Just a sec...
The ATmega 8 is only the chip!
Use an Arduino(Google it) or an AXON if you don't want to make your own microcontroller.
+1 my "Helpful" button if this helped ;)

When you build the $50 robot you're basically building a microcontroller. All the electronic pieces you put together are the microcontroller.

The only other parts it uses are the modified servos (motors), and sensors.

I think the confusion here is that some people use "microcontroller" to refer to just the chip (eg. ATmega8), while others use "microcontroller" to refer to a board that includes a microcontroller chip (eg. Arduino, Axon).

The context is usually enough to tell which one, but apparently not here.

A microcontroller is... The chip, the whole chip and nothing but the chip!
Otherwise, it's a microcontroller board or something like that
