sharp IR rangefinder that senses color?

Are you trying to sense range, or color? Can't do both; at least without expensive 3D camera tracking.

You can get a sensor that will tell you how far away something is, or you can get one that tells' you what color it is.

range sensing tells you how far away something is. That's what a Sharp IR does.

Something like this (http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=8663) tells you what color something is.

If you are just looking to sense contrast (light or dark) you can look at the sensors line following robots use to follow lines.

Thanks! Is there anything that has to be attached to it to allow it to sense colors?

Which are you asking about?

There's nothing you can attach to a Sharp IR to sense colors. Like I said they only tell you how far away something is.

The sensor from sparkfun has everything it needs to sense color I believe. But it doesn't sense distance at all; and only works for things very close to it.

I was talking about the color sensor, so thanks that works!

you can use just a photoresistor to find color there's an excellent tutorial on sor about that.

The link given shows a board for a color sensor,

It includes the color sensor, and has all the supporting hardware needed to run the sensor.

http://www.societyofrobots.com/sensors_color.shtml (http://www.societyofrobots.com/sensors_color.shtml) read it all really helps and it can be accurate with the right calculation

Digi-key has everything, with prices usually better then SparkFun (http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Cat=524729)

I could, but you would have to tell me what your goal is, what are you trying to sense?

Usually, a red, green, and blue LED would let you sense every color, it's just a mater of mixing the reads. Orange objects would have a mix of red and green.

Thanks, I tired the three colors but they didn't have any that had the specs that I want so I found an orange one. Thanks,
