I recently was given 5 old VCR's for parts. I have never broken into a VCR and was wondering what parts I should be looking for to salvage for robot items? Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Well open them and take a look. Then let your imagination find uses for the parts you found.

Counter-intuitively, most vcr's don't have much for scrap other than caps and resistors. Sure there are motors in there but most serve an extremely specific purpose.
Maybe you'll get lucky and it'll have some nice parts, maybe not. It's a case-to-case sort of thing.

It mainly depends upon the age of the VCR. Newer ones have the dreaded "house chips" that you can't find datasheets for, or their just those unbelievably tiny surface mount chips.
