Title: "programmer" $50 bot

For the $50 bot, in order to upload the code to the ATmega8 a "programmer" is needed. Where can I buy one?

I bought the AVR ISP MKII from Digikey. You can google AVR ISP MKII and then click the shopping link and it will take you to some vendors. Best I can remember I paid $35?
