Title: Waterproofing and sealing a robot
Post by: NGuggemos on December 12, 2011, 09:10:40 PM
What's up SOR! I have a question on how to seal my robot, so that no air or water can penetrate it's frame. On each side of the frame in my design, there are holes for the axles to penetrate through my frame wall. I have pillow block bearings holding the axle (one on the inside of the frame, and one on the outside, if you have any better suggestions about doing this, let me know) Any suggestions for sealing or waterproofing my robot would make me very happy! I am a bit of a beginner, so I might need basic terminology on complicated suggestions.

A search and rescue robot made out of aluminum and has treads. About a foot of water.

The axes could be sealed with hydraulic seals. Some of these could hold to 5000 psi.

Also, you could try silicone rubber sealant like this in the picture http://www.amazon.com/08641-Corning-Silicone-Sealant-10-1-Ounce/dp/B000BD0QAK/ref=lh_ni_t (http://www.amazon.com/08641-Corning-Silicone-Sealant-10-1-Ounce/dp/B000BD0QAK/ref=lh_ni_t)

Your electronics should be kept in tube-shaped containers. Box shapes are susceptible to water leaking in.

Use transparent tubes so you can easily check for leaks. Use waterproof wire connectors coming out of the tube containers.
