Title: Robots and FPGAs
Post by: safemalloc on March 31, 2012, 12:15:12 PM
Hi everyone,

I am new to robotics and I am looking for some advice.

I have a bit of experience in hardware design using fpgas(field programmable gate arrays) and I am planning to use them for controlling robots. I am about to get a new Digilent Atlys board :

and I am hoping to get a robot-car which has a movable arm as well and which can be remotely controlled (say via bluetooth) or wired control by rs232.

I am kind of bored with static prototyping and want something which can move about and do things  icon_smile
Since I am not aware of the kits available in the US for "car+movable arm+remote control", I am hoping someone more knowledgeable can give me some advice on what to buy.

I guess since the processing stuff can be done on the FPGA, the robot can be just "dumb" & receive signals for its motors from the FPGA. I have been looking at http://www.robotshop.com/ca/robots-colleges-universities.html?lang=en-us (http://www.robotshop.com/ca/robots-colleges-universities.html?lang=en-us)
but I am not sure whats the most dependable place to order robots online from.

Thanks
