Title: ir object detection

hi guys,
i am new to robotics.i wanted to make a robot for competition.i need to detect an object coming to me and give a signal,just like a buzzer or something.i think i need to use ir sensors.plz help me with this.i wud be happy if i get some ckt diagrams and how to write the programs?????????
