Title: DOFS
Post by: mt360 on May 21, 2013, 11:31:02 AM
Hi again, I have a question. I googled it, and all that, but couldn't find an answer.
What is a DOF? They were mentioned to me but I have no idea what it is.

DOF = "Degrees Of Freedom"
Google will find many definitions on the full spelling.

What does a DOF (degree of freedom) mean ?

Let me take the door as an example, It can rotate around the side it's hinged to . yes ?
Then this is a degree of freedom, Ok ?

A body in space. How many DOFs it has ?

to answer it, Imagine the Cartesian co-ordinate system X-Y-Z

I can go along X +ve or X -ve    - >  1 DOF

I can go along Y +ve or Y -ve    - >  1 DOF

I can go along Z +ve or Z -ve    - >  1 DOF

I can rotate about X - > 1 DOF

I can rotate about Y - > 1 DOF

I can rotate about Z - > 1 DOF

- I hope you got it, Good luck  :)
