Google now owns Boston Dynamics, creator of Big Dog and Atlas. What are they really up to?

I can only guess, but maybe Google really wants to win at DARPA (http://www.livescience.com/42053-darpa-robotics-challenge-preview.html (http://www.livescience.com/42053-darpa-robotics-challenge-preview.html)) and this is a hail mary approach! ;D
I have not found any reference to how much they paid for BD, but I can only imagine.
