Title: building sensors

Im a novice trying to build my own IR sensors.any advice on the parts i need  and how to calibrate and approximately how long it will take.
any advice will be highly appreciated.

For the best info on simple IR sensors, I would take a look at Parallax's BOEbot tutorials.  You can download it for free here:  http://www.parallax.com/dl/docs/books/edu/Roboticsv2_2.pdf

i am buillding a robot to go through a maze, so i will use them for range of the wall

Why not just buy a Sharp IR rangefinder (http://www.societyofrobots.com/sensors_sharpirrange.shtml)? They cost like $12 :P

i could but its a competition and its based on being able to make your robot as cheap as possible.
