If you are entering a robotics competition then you  maybe  can get sponsors

I mostly get money from my school ( but then its the school's property not yours)

If you have a team of experienced robot builders and are entering some serious competition or are doing some serious robotics research - chances are you will get sponsorship.

What i recommend: have companies donate tax-deductible donations to your school, which they will use to sponsor a robotics team.

I don't mean to be a pessimist , but why should the companies give you money to use on robotics , when they can give it to someone more experienced?

Then try to draw some people in........

make a cool robot yourself and then people will see how cool it is!

I see the paradox emerging

the time will come when you will need to buy parts

think of it as an investment, you'll reuse the parts again on other robots

also there is such a thing as Free Samples - for cheap parts , like resistors, LEDS, MCUs

and eBay

also , look into hacking motorized toys instead of making from new.

AND SAVE UP $$$

I think its time to ask your parents for money in return for good grades and all chores done for a month :P

Tell them its for your education and future career too.

(you are their investment :P)

Have you looked for Corporate Sponsorships (as compared to local business sponsorships)... Joe's Plumbing won't get much in return for sponsoring your robot, but companies that make components for robots , like National Semiconductor, Atmel, Parallax, Bane, Microsoft, Intel, etc. may have a greater interest in helping you out.

true but the companies that make servos and stuff , rarely give out free stuff
companies like hitec and parallax and bane have so many requests coming in , that chances are you'll get nothing.

Free samples is the easiest way - but thats for small , cheap parts
