Did you only order the basic stamp, or did you order the Boe-Bot kit which is based on the basic stamp?
I hear the Boe-Bot is quite good, only a little expensive.
Here's is nice video of the Boe-Bot with the CMUcam.

Parallax is a great company and has very good support along with a very active forum.  There are lots you can do with BASIC Stamps.  If you are into visioning, but don't like the CMUcam, you can get a small wireless camera and a wireless serial connection (via bluetooth or Xbee) and use RoboRealm to do the vision processing.

The BASIC Stamp does not have an analog to digital converter . . .

wouldn't that require having the computer within range of the robot at all times though?
i could just put a laptop on the bot.

The BASIC Stamp does not have an analog to digital converter . . .

That is not a problem considering it doesn't even have interrupts... ( I know he is a beginner and interrupts etc etc etc...)
But still it doesn't... bad bad bad bad....

Personally, I don't recommend BS2... It's a good start for the first two - three projects... then... bye bye happiness.
It's good you ordered the boe - bot version. The chassis is a good one!!!

I would get a arduino for the start. And if I liked the concept then move on to a platform like AXON...
And Yes arduino can be also programmed in Basic via BASCOM.
