I've seen these recommended elsewhere http://www.trossenrobotics.com/linear-actuators.aspx (http://www.trossenrobotics.com/linear-actuators.aspx)
but these seem to be extra expensive. Anybody know where I can find some actuators with a long stroke length but less price?

servo city

the actuators on servocity are $199 a piece

What about just using a rack gear to create linear motion from a servo or a motor?
You can see an example here towards the bottom of the page http://www.vexlabs.com/vex-robotics-advanced-gear-kit.shtml (ftp://http://www.vexlabs.com/vex-robotics-advanced-gear-kit.shtml)
You can probably find more using google.

what stroke length, force, and price range are you looking for?

he meant servo actuators http://www.servocity.com/html/heavy_duty_servo_actuators_.html (http://www.servocity.com/html/heavy_duty_servo_actuators_.html)
which are 199 bucks
