what about arduino? I think that usually come with atmega 168, but they are pin compatible (168 just has more memory)

You still need some soldering with most development boards to add peripherals and such.  Better to just learn not to burn yourself.

burning yourself is all apart of the experience!  ;D

And don't worry, you haven't burnt yourself as badly as i have once before...

I was just finishing off a job to do with my USB Charger, it was 10pm and i was pretty tired. I picked up the soldering iron to do the last little thing...and when i looked down at my hand, i realised i was holding the soldering iron from the "hot" bit!!!    (i had blisters for the next month!!!)   (it still gives me shivers!!!)

Pololu do a series called Orangutan which are mainly based on AvR168 (like AtMega8 but more RAM). These do, or dont, come with stuff like LCDs, switches etc depending on your budget. In particular they come with 2 H-Bridges which are great if driving DC motors rather than servos.
Having said all that: I haven't used them yet ! But will be doing in the near future - they look like good value.
Am sure others will prove me wrong  ;)
