Welcome aboard! I got all excited when I saw that you live in malvern, then I continued to read that it is in England... the Malvern I know is in the suburbs of Philadelphia (thats in Pennsylvania in the USA) which is near me... oh well :(
I would start with the $50 Robot tutorial here on this site or look at some of the well known robot kits (like the Parallax BOEbot) to get a good basic understanding of microcontrollers, motor controllers, etc.

Thanks Steve

I wouldn't post your e-mail address... unless you really like spam...
No need to e-mail you... If you are interested, do some research... when you don't understand something, ask a question and we will all be glad to help you out... but you need to do your research and ask specific questions to get the best responses.

I apologize Cyboy, I hope it didn't discourage you! :-\
Anyway, I recommend to just start reading tons of robot literature. Start here for the very basics:

I'm not sure, but I don't think battlebots are cheap!!
Especially after they get "thrashed" and you have to keep rebuilding them.

yeah the cheapest good battlebot possible to build would probably be around $250 to $300.
