Hi there, my name's Chris and I'm way on the other side of the world from most of you in New Zealand. I really want to make the $50 robot but I'm having trouble finding a programmer that's not going to be too costly to ship. I found this 'AVR ISP Serial Programmer Kit' at this site (http://www.jaycar.com.au/index.asp) (in NZ), Cat No. KC5340.
From what I can gather from the Atmel site (http://www.atmel.com/dyn/products/tools_card.asp?family_id=607&family_name=AVR%AE+8%2DBit+RISC+&tool_id=2726), this is mkI of the ISP2 recommended.
From the site:
"AVR In-System Programmer is used for field upgrades of existing products using the Atmel AVR ArchitectureAVR In-System Programmer based on the STK500 Hardware and Software. Supports all In-System Programmable AVR devices."
And from the documentation:
"AVRISP supports all AVR 8-bit RISC Micro Controllers with ISP programming option" including ATmega series and low voltage variants.
My question: Can I use this controller and is it just an old model or does the ISP2 have features which I need?
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Chris.

Have you shopped around at other places like mouser.com?
At $45 for this device, I don't think you'd be saving enough money on shipping to be worth lots of extra potential frustration . . .
Since the ATmega8 is 8 bit, and this programmer claims it "allows you to program a multitude of micros in the AVR 8-bit RISC family," I'm guessing it will work . . . but it doesn't specifically mention ATmega8 . . . perhaps email the company that makes it to verify?
