An interesting explanation of how facial recognition in 3D can be accomplished.

its worth looking at, if just for the pictures and videos

It works by making 3D measurements of your face, and storing that data. When doing matching, it rotates the 3D data to find a best fit match to your face.
But of course it doesnt account for other important things, such as hair . . .
