Can anyone help me what I need is a sensor to detect the difference between a cue ball from the rest of the balls in a set of billiard balls. The sensor needs to actuate a lever that will instantiously throw the cue ball to the side.
You can email me at [email protected] if you have any information as to how this can be done.

looks like a job for vision processing... check out the free system at www.RoboRealm.com (http://www.RoboRealm.com)

you might also look into sonar seeing as a cue ball is slightly larger than all the others. a sensitive enough system might be able to pick up the difference.
just a thought.

definitely
Roborealm is for computers , but if you want it to be only microcontroller based look at AVRcam , CMUcam, and Blackfin camera boards.
what is your experience?

It might be easier than you think.
Take a look at this. (http://www.societyofrobots.com/sensors_color.shtml)
