Title: Possible wireless controller?
Post by: Cotowar on July 09, 2008, 06:51:40 PM
Wireless technology is currently limited to a couple hundred feet of the source, but is it possible to modify a cellphone transmitter to send a signal to a custom reciever? or to the cell tower, then to another custom cellphone transmitter hooked to a laptop?

It could all be free if you choose the proper service provider for both phones before the mod....but can it be done? I've always wanted to make a robot that could walk down the street without me walking behind it, just to freak people out.

Help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you sir. I had no idea what to look for regarding this topic. Thanks for the help.

Oh, and because TV has gotten so incredibly horrible lately, I threw together a basic layout for an informational website about all things electronic. I got tired of updating after the layout was concerned, so I'll do more tomorrow, but I've got some great sections in there, and will have loads of information.

Its a forum like this site, but instead of using it for Q&A, the main focus is going to be on hardware specifications and properties. Questions will be welcome, and will be answered as well as possible, but I figure it would save everyone on here a load of time google-ing, the info would all be in once place.

Cheers.

Sorry for the double post, But I dont think this is exactly what I'm looking for. I'm completely dumb when it comes to devices other than PC's, so clarification would be great.

From what I understand, this device receives a signal that is generated by a telephone. The phone sounds generate a signal which is transmitted to the cell tower, through the phone company or whatever, and output from the cell tower to the robotic device?

If this is correct, can the robot communicate back? and can you modify your telephone so that its not a phone anymore, but instead just a way for a computer to do the same thing? If so, one would think I could hook my modded phone up to my laptop and press the right keys, and BAM, control my robot wirelessly from a remote computer.

This sounds too good to be true, so if someone with more experience in this area could straighten me out it would be most appreciated. I just did an immediate google on it and read the top 4 sites that came up. This is what I understood from it.

Cheers.

ok so with the DTMF , you are just outputing tones to the robot and the robot responds with tones. I'm too lazy to explain more right now, but google has a lot of stuff about this , search around for a while

or you could even use text messaging to do actions. Look online ,many people have done this before and its not that difficult.

I don't think this is exactly what I'm looking for. I'm looking for a long range wireless controller. I'm not sure if RF will do the trick, and 802.11N just doesn't have the range. That's what I was thinking when I said cell phones. I figure cell phones are transmitting data constantly to the cell tower, and to a second phone during a call. If there were some way to modify this so that instead of transmitting a call, it transmits controlling instructions, and modify it so that my computer can transmit, I think I would have a reasonable remote device.

Basically I want to run my robot from my computer from REALLY far away. It's just an idea, but if anyone knows how to do this it would be wonderful.

I think this might be what I'm looking for.

there are also some stuffs called GSM modems. I think they support text (SMS) receipt. you can use that to send complex commands.
