Title: IR Sensors and Transmitters question

Is it possible to mimic the IR transmitters and sensors that the Wii has.  Im looking for the same idea but in a computer application.

To clarify:

There are two transmitters spaced apart on one end, and a separate sensor which detects the two IR transmitters.

transmitters as in data transmitters, or sensors?

Transmitters as in LEDs, no need to transmit any data.
