Title: Whats wrong with my Microconroller
Post by: offy on September 27, 2008, 09:29:04 AM
I have been building the $50 robot and I have been working on the Brains on a bread board.

I did everything and the servos don't seem to move and the  LED doesn't even come up

The 5Volt Linear Regulator gets really really hot and it drains my 4X AA battery pack down to 0.0 volts after a few minutes. So the regulator is taking 6 volts and not releasing it. What is wrong?

Seems like you have a short circuit somewhere.

NB The LED will only come on if you tell thr pin it is attached to go low. Its not a power-on indicator. Sort out your short circult first as that may cause the LED not to light up anyway.

Since you've using breadboard - turn the power off - and remove some of the unneeded components - such as the LED and its resistor, the servos, the ISP etc - so just about everything except the power supply and the chip. Turn the power back on and check that the regulator doesn't get hot. Once you've sorted out the problem then add some of the other bits, one at a time, (with the power off) and keep checking for heat. Until you get the lot back on the board.

Ok thanks. I will start building this later on today.

EDIT* I have tyed this and I just can't build a micro controller. Can someone help me find a micro controller that can run atleast 1 servo and 2 sensors. I know very simple micro controller but thats all I need.*EDIT

Don't give up that quick! Get out your multimeter and figure out what's shorting :P

Plenty of mcu products here:
