Title: Wiring for this Infrared sensor?

Okay, I'm planning to use this infrared sensor in my robot's gripper mechanism, sort of like a near-object sensor for  detecting when an object is within its grasp.

My problem is, I'm not sure how to wire it to a power supply and microcontroller.  ??? I think I understand what the wires do, but I'm not 100% sure where to hook them up. I've searched online and can't find any example wiring diagrams...

I've never done this, but I like to learn.

It looks like there is two connections here..

One is your Photoresister wiring, like it says in the schematic in the data sheet.

I'm not sure how to wire up the emitter/collector. I'm assuming some sort of pulse output.

I've used that one before as a line following sensor. Its fairly simple to use but don't expect to get ranging with it.

Then just do an A2D to get an analog reading or use a comparator to get a digital signal from the sensor.

I see, so it works best as a line follower, (or an encoder), but probably not too suitable for a near-object sensor, even so really short ranges (such as in the gasping range of a gripper). For example, if there's a black soda can its not going to sense it.

Anyone have any ideas on what sensor would be suitable for that? A sharp IR's too far a rang. I need something that's best in really short range. Maybe like this one?

It will be OK for very short ranges ( around 2-3") but you wont be able to get perfect accuracy depending on the color of the soda can.

I see. All right, then, I'll buy one and experiment with it a bit. If it doesn't work, I'll try a different approach.

Yeah, I've read that tutorial. Great stuff. I wanted something I could just buy pre-made though, but I guess building an IR sensor like that wouldn't be too difficult either...

It might also give me a little practice with soldering (I've never soldered before, but I've been planning to teach myself soon anyway.)
