I added a new section to the Robot Parts List (http://www.societyofrobots.com/robot_parts_list.shtml):
http://www.societyofrobots.com/robot_parts_list_software.shtml
Ideally I want to list all the good software useful for designing and making robots. If anyone feels I'm missing software on the list, or wants to offer their experienced thoughts on some of the software, feel free to post it here.
Both freeware and commercial software are listed.

Imho PCAD is worth adding to "PCB Design".. and Eagle is not really freeware. "Limited version available for non-profit use" I would say.
And OpenCV to "Computer vision"
-
Yeah, and maybe JalaCNC and KCam4 to "CAM" list...
-
what about a list of microcontroller programming software and libraries?
Procyon AVRlib definatley deserves a mention: http://www.mil.ufl.edu/~chrisarnold/components/microcontrollerBoard/AVR/avrlib/
dunk.

perhaps this

I use it all the time.

http://www.scilab.org/
While not as overwhelmingly powerful as MATLAB, which is very useful for high level robotics, SciLab is an open source clone of it. I'm yet to see robotics projects with it, but it does do vision analysis apparently. I'd recommend this for anyone who doesn't have a large budget for MATLAB.

Ok all suggestions added. I don't plan to do an exhaustive list, just listing the most popular/useful software.
(PCAD no longer exists)

I would highly reccomend T-Flex student edition, it is a free 3d/2d cad with basic FEA capabilities

Well since this was brought up I thought I would mention Webbot's library would be a nice addition so I don't have to hunt down his posts to find the address everytime I need it :)

I would be remiss in not mentioning the free RobotBASIC.
