hi.i am gathering ideas about building my first robot.basically what i wanna do is emit a radio signal from a transmitter which my robot will follow and arrive somewhere near the transmitter by avoiding obstacles.is this possible? actually anything that emits a signal and can be followed will do.so where do i start with this following thing?

I don't know about using "radiowaves", but the other side of the spectrum is useful, infrared. You can use infrared, a Sharp IR Distance Sensor

@toocool
You are just referring to RF sniffing. IF that is so, then just buy an RF sniffer. Connect its output to the MCU. Then the MCU will process the data until some conditions are met.
The RF sniffer should have a capability to produces an obvious rises in frequency as the signal gets stronger and nearer to the mobile robot.

You may have some difficulty doing that...
