this question just happened to pop in my head today how do you do it? is it cheaper? and is it worth it?

There is a tutorial on this site detailing what an hbridge is made of. (just click on the societyofrobots logo for the main website with links).
probably there is no cost difference between making your own h-bridge and buying an h-bridge ic. The real difference is how much space they take up on a circuit board. buying an h-bridge ic like the lm298 is likely to be a lot smaller and tidier than connecting 4 mosfets together (or 8 in comparison to the l298).
Also buying an ic, you can just look at the datasheet to find out the technical info like reaction speed, gains and pickup etc... whereas building your own its a lot more difficult to get this info

Building an h-bridge will allow you maximum flexibility, though. You can use any mosfets you want, as long as they are driven right, so you won't be limited by 2 Amps (theorethical) or somewhere around 1-1.5Amps (practical) on a L298.
