Title: belt or direct drive?
Post by: geek1 on December 26, 2008, 10:27:23 AM
I am designing a diffirential drive robot with an HDPE chassis. I was wondering if I should Drive th wheels directly, or via belt?

don't use belts , drive them directly.

Belts are a pain to use and fall apart unless you really know what you are doing.

why would you use belt drive when you can use direct drive... Only use belts if you need it to go faster more power or just cant pu tthe motor were you need it.....

I agree with jamort's advice.  There is another situation where you wouldn't want to use direct drive - if your gearmotor output shaft bearings can't handle the radial load placed on them.  This usually won't be a problem for lighter robots.

and really in truelly when you try to use belts on small robots its harder to get them to work... then if it was a larger one
if you use rubberbands like the lego kits do you strech it to much it wont work you dont stretch it enoguh it wont work

plus i mena your asking which is better it basically depends totally on what the situation is if you need belts you need belts if you dont thank god you might save a headache and some power on your battery for your drill...(you may have to redrill or even start completely over)

I'm sorry iI have to say this but you know roboboy12 the fact that like you havent been on the forum very long and to come in on this post and just put airmann00 (being hes not the only person talking about direct and then drive) then put the little in your face thing  :P doesnt show a lot about yourself
and being that you have two posts that have completely opposed each other one that says that im a master without a kit and then one that said something about being a beiginer doesn't show a lot
You know its ok just show a little more respect to EVERYONE in the forum...
