Title: Recommend me a robot base
Post by: arixrobotics on January 13, 2009, 12:33:47 AM
Hi all,

I'm building a remote-controlled robosoccer set just for fun. The plan is to have 4 robots controlled by 4 human players. Currently I'm not in the position to fabricate my own robot bases, so I'm looking to buy them premade. I want them to be robust to withstand rough plays, fast and cost <$100 each. And not too big either. 15x15 cm is probably the maximum size. Note that I'm not interested in any electronics.

I've been looking through all the major robot supplier website, but none seem to be perfect.

Any suggestions?

by base do you mean the material, like a block? or premade with holes and stuff drilled out? if its just the materials you could check out www.mcmaster.com :) bets of luck with your soccer team lol

I think the Pololu round robot chasis is the best so far, considering the cost. Have anyone used this chasis? Are they fast enough as a remote-contolled robot?

it depends on what gear ratio you use

Quote
There are two ways to put the kit together: with a high-speed 58:1 gear ratio or with a slower 203:1 gear ratio

hmm I think servo driven are too slow to make an interesting RC soccer robot. I'll go with DC motors.

I'm actually planning to make remote controlled robosoccer set so that I could play with my non-robot building friends.

and I might even bring them to some events promoting science and engineering to school children. the idea is to use a PS controller to control the robot. this will excite the kids as they are using something that they are very well familiar with, but to do something totally different.

and if this idea turned out to be a real crowd pleaser, I might even set it up as an attraction during any on campus events and charge people for playing :)

what do you guys think?

you mean a play staition controller u should be able to trace the wires from the cord back to the buttons on the controller then just solder the wires to the connections on the remote control.

You could start mini-tournaments where people pay a small fee to make a small team and they play against each other, with a grand prize of 50% of the total fees  ;D
