you need to download the AVR studio and other programs off of the 50 dollar robot tutorial. buy the AVRISP2 IN-SYSTEM PROGRAMMER MK2 RC. program it to do what you want it to do.

eg,
*  light sensing/photovore/photophobe
*  camera vision
*  distance finding (sharp IR range finding, Sonar)

You won't be using a receiver since it will be autonomous - instead a microcontroller will be controlling everything. The $50 robot tutorial will explain everything.

i am very new myself to the robot thing... but from what i've been able to figure out... you want to get yourself a programmable microcontroller.. so you can have inputs from sensors and outputs to devices like motors.  There are many microcontrollers on the market, but the one i found to start with is the arduino board.  its a simple board that allows u to connect it to ur computer with a usb wire, and program it using a language much like C.
