Hi,
are you sure it must be PIC? Can it be AVR?

And I can testify to the quality of the EPIC programmer

The 3 PIC's you have are not of high value, take a good look at AVR's before you commit to either. I also started with PIC's but now I'm switching over to AVR's because of the better performance and better instruction set. The instruction set is especially important!

If you stay with pics then use something from the PIC18 family rather than the PIC16 family. They have an expanded instruction set and come with free C compilers.

I know the PIC16f84a for sure doesnt have any analog to digital pins which means that you can sample sensors like photoresistors easily.

The people at SoR are typically AVR people. We'll be able to better answer your tough questions ;D

Anyway, an AVR will set you back like $3 so its not going to be an expensive switch.
