Now that the US Airforce is buying more unmanned aircraft than manned (http://www.societyofrobots.com/robotforum/index.php?topic=6530.0), it needs lasers to shoot them down too. I wonder which country uses UAVs against US troops, anyway?
Laser Avenger, developed by Boeing Directed Energy Systems in Albuquerque, N.M., and Boeing Combat Systems in Huntsville, Ala., integrates a directed energy weapon together with the kinetic weapons on the proven Avenger air defense system. It is a Boeing-funded initiative to demonstrate that directed energy weapons are maturing and are relevant to today's battlefield.

If you look at the image closely, you'll see what looks like a black goose sitting on top of the turret . . . and a box-shaped SoR robot colored green, with two yellow eyes, on the left of the turret (under the laser) . . . but then again its past my bedtime . . .
