I've used Google SketchUp to design my last two robots.  Now I can't imagine not modeling in 3D before building.  It's saved me alot of rework.

I recommend Solid Works, this program has really great capability

It's free for students, I use it for designing my mobile robots, for example:

I use Solid Works. I learned it fast, and you can get many already made parts of it from http://www.3dcontentcentral.com/default.aspx (http://www.3dcontentcentral.com/default.aspx) so it will save you time.
