I am trying to justify to myself if I should purchase the following device : http://microcontrollershop.com/product_info.php?products_id=2374 (http://microcontrollershop.com/product_info.php?products_id=2374)
I think that it will be good in that I can learn a lot of programming with the AVR in the C language. I was wondering if I could use it for my $50 dollar robot. I know that it comes with a chip and I am sure that I could use the tutorials to help me on my way of becoming a robotic programmer extrordiaire, but I have to sell it to myself and to my wife. If you could give me your advice on the matter I would appreciate it.

Looks great to me. If learning how to use AVR is your only aim, then yes! You should get it. The wide range of peripherals means the tutorials won't be too tedious and maybe even useful ;)
The things you won't learn how to do though (compared to making the $50 dollar robot and beyond) are soldering, sourcing components, designing schematics and PCBs (with CAD like the Eagle software) and all the hardware side of things.
I guess it could be advantageous to learn the programming and software side of MCUs isolated from the many hardware problems that always occur...
And the price seems reasonable!

Thank you for your input, I am also making the $50 dollar robot because I want the experiance making the circuit board. I also want the help with the programming mode, since my degree will be in computer science, I figured it wont hurt LOL.

programming is always a handy thing to learn, so if you have the opportunity to learn it, take it!
