Title: Conversation AI

Ok this isn't something I'll be implementing right now with a robot, but I'm interested of how conversation AI works.  I'm looking for something basic that I can work on and improve.  More so, I just want to learn how the concept is implemented.

I'm familar with C, php, MSBASIC, and some JavaScript.  If anyone could point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.

AliceBot (http://"http://www.pandorabots.com/pandora/talk?botid=f5d922d97e345aa1") is a prime example of what I'm looking to learn to do.
