Random project: make an accelerometer based mouse in the form of a gun for FPS gaming.
So far I have wired up the ps/2 connector for the mouse. The ps/2 protocol is a lot simpler than the USB, so I decided to start out with those.

wow, that looks nice razor!
just out of curiosity, is that the arduino slim? cant remember the real name... the one that was on sale?

I once work on such a project..... Use gyros....
Or gyros with compensation of accelerometers...
Accelerometers alone WON'T help....
They are good at detecting rapid movement and such.....
And they will help you with reload buttons, secondary attacks like weapon kicks.... or even help you
switch weapons....
Don't use it as a mouse cause you are gonna have limited buttons and such....
Use it as a joystick..... It would be a hell more fun.... But also guess you gonna need a USB host for this
cause gameport quite doesn't even exists.... :P nowadays.....
Anyways.... I know gyros are hell more expensive and such.... But you are only gonna see good things with gyros....
Else you gonna waste time for nothing....
I wanted to make a hand mouse, so I really have looked some possibilities is it... But also may have overlooked others....
It's your choice.....
And hey..... Gyros are HARD to solder........ So either get a breakout board OR use RC gyros.... both are good!!!! :D

It was the one that was on sale, a seeeduino.
I will experiment with accelerometers first to see what I can get working. If that fails I'll get two rc gyros from ebay, only 24 shipped.

I'm not trying to discourage you.... for god shake....
But I "apply" some thoughts.... really....

Tricky is right, you won't get position information from the accelerometers. You'll get roll and pitch if your gun is static at best. Its why the wiimote doesn't give you one to one correspondance with your movement. And why they are bringing out the wii motion plus with the gyros.
I'd say start with accelerometers, see the limitations and then add gyros to make it more accurate. All the best with the project.
