Title: Atmega8 VS Atmega168 Vs Atmega328

Could anyone outline the major advantages to the ICs. I've looked at datasheets and I know they are interchangeable in terms of pin layout. From what I gather the 168 has more memory and can run faster, and the 328 is another step up. Is there any other difference between them other than speed and memory?

Only just from memory I believe that the timers are also different. And doesn't one have more pin interrupts?

You are on the right path looking at the data sheets. You need to compare each peripheral section.

ETA: The mega8 is not recommended for new designs. This tells me that the mega8A uses a different process and likely has different voltage specs. Same with the newer 168 (A? P?).

It actually goes mega48pa-88pa-168pa-328p

The mega8 is in a different "class" of atmegas, which is similar but not basically the same like the above.
