Title: Alternative to cardboard wheels

I was thinking "There has to be something better than cardboard wheels" when I had the idea "Hardback book covers!"

In theory you could just go to a yard sale, buy an old book on accounting or someting for like a dime, and cut up the covers for dense wheels with reletively good traction.

Since it's just laminated paper, it should be easy to cut with almost any saw or seraded knife.
or even a razor blade.

Gotta do some testing with this to see if it's actually a good idea, what do you think?

Hi,

Some of the CDs and DVDs with commercials, internet providers setup, or failed burns etc. are likely candidates as well.
2 of them stacked, perhaps with a thin washer in between and you've got a ridge for a rubber band, or laminate them around some neoprene rubber and cut it slightly larger (after laminating) and you have good traction.

but cd's don't give you any option for wheel diameter

I once made wheels from CDs. I stacked 3 on top of each other, screwed them together but they had npt traction at all. So i went around the edge with some hot glue and it works amaizingly. Great traction. and the servo horn was attached by two small screws, really easy.

I don't know how to change the wheel diameter easily other than throwing them on a lathe to get an even reduction. Or maybe a hole saw?

I reckon a lathe would crack it...
You could try plastic, wood or even metal if you have the right tools for it...
Anything is really possible if you have a lathe and 20 minutes!

humm. make that two vices or g clamps or something...

maybe make a robot to do it!

i've made better cardboard wheels if that helps. they're MUCH bettr

I once used plastic jar lids as wheels for my robot. They worked well but attaching it to the motor axle is a problem.

I had once planned to uses yo yo as wheels. They come in all sizes and desings and look cool but again attaching it the motor is a problem.

As far as cardboard is concerned, I've never tried them, but I'm not sure how long they would last.
