Battery Leads

I bought a battery for a robot I'm working on (6V - 1600mAh) and the leads on it are rated for 600V and like 3mm thick. Can I just cut these off and replace them with wires that I can put into a plug that I can actually use on my board or is there a reason for these huge wires?

Well the current is fixed at 6v - so it just depends on how much current you will draw. If the wires are too thin - they will get hot and melt

you can refer to this table http://www.cablesandconnectors.com/wiregauge.html to calculate the wire gauge you can use.

Hi,

Thinner wires equals higher resistance equals larger voltage drop over the wires.
Never use a thin wire when you don't absolutely have to.

A rather fast and fairly heavy robot with quite large wheels needs what? A lot of power?

i wouldn't cut the leads off, i'd just make a wire that has the type of connector the battery has on one end and the type of connector you need on the other
use the google.  it's your friend.
