Pololu 3pi as starter robot

hi what do you think of the 3pi as a starter robot I didnt want to go all out and buy bit by bit as i have no past experience and any ideas to expand it using the expansion kit with cut outs to make it a bit more interesting heres a link:   http://www.active-robots.com/products/robots/pololu-robots.shtml

From what I've seen it seems to be a fine robot to start with, although if you're going to buy that why not just design your own custom 50 dollar robot?
It would be harder, but you would learn so much more.

I was in a maze-solving robot contest last year where several of the teams had 3pi's.  It's quite a nice robot - well-designed and nimble.

my mom doesnt want bits every where for her to step on
plus i might be able to get it free on the sparkfun free day

well, your "bits" could just be kept in a box or tray?
I'm sure she doesn't want to be stepping on robots either?

You can get it, but the learning experience you will receive is nowhere near building your own. (Kind of the point of a first robot?)
