Hello everyone and reccomendations?
« on: September 06, 2010, 11:34:50 AM »
So after competing in FLL and FIRST I've decided to build a real robot, but I'm not sure what I should do. I have some electronics background from taking classes at school. I'm currently in electronics 3 so we have used preprogrammed ICs and stuff, and I'm probably definately going to build the 50$ robot, but I have a question... I need to but tools like soldering iron, stripper, breadboard, but lookin at some of the prices I'm not that sure if I'm going to be able to afford it till i get a job... I'll probably be on about a 300$ limit, and I would like to have some left to build another robot after the 50$ advice?

A real robot!? ...Man you dont know how much I've wanted to do FIRST...I asked my school but there was no teacher support.  :-[ :'( Your also lucky your school has electronic classes...

With $300 I think you will be able to get all required tools, materials and components you will need to build the $50 robot and then some.

To get your started...

Order the components for the $50 robot from Digikey as the tutorial suggests, or buy a kit here.
For things like the Soldering iron, solder, helping hands (you need them, trust me!), and desoldering tools I would first search your local surplus shop.  If that doesnt work out, you can try the electronic goldmine.
For cheap components, including LED's, pin heades, capacitors, potentiometers, photoreistors etc. You can try Tayda electronics.
For cheap servos, you can buy them from Hobby King, or eBay (these will be clones from what I've heard).
For batteries, I suggest this one (I got a couple, they are the Perfect size for robotics), with this charger, or maybe even this kit.  Feel free to also just use AA and/or 9 volt batteries you have laying around if you want to cut costs.
As for building materials, well you can find them just about anywhere...cardboard, broken toys, etc. or take a trip to the hardware store for stuff like acrylic or plywood. (If you have the tools to machine it)
I also suggest going to your local dollar store and buying some velcro and/or double sided foam tape.
lastly, for your sensor needs, I suggest looking around the following shops: Sparkfun, seedstudios, Polulu, or reffer to this page.

Good luck! :)

okay I had a lot longer reply but something went wrong and well it wound up not posting so I'll just say thanks for the links, and I want to ask if the soldering iron here is any good http://www.goldmine-elec-products.com/prodinfo.asp?number=G17860 because I'm a little skeptical because of the low price...

I haven't used that actual soldering iron so I cant say for sure.  I just use a single temperature, 30watt soldering iron...its cheap and if it breaks its easy to replace.
That soldering iron you found should be just fine though.

Note: When you buy solder, make sure that you either buy rosin core solder, or buy flux if you choose not to buy a rosin core solder.

from what I've seen with solder doesnt flux normally come built in to the the reel. I know what we have at school already has flux.. you just get some off and its ready to go

Hi,

[...] I want to ask if the soldering iron here is any good http://www.goldmine-elec-products.com/prodinfo.asp?number=G17860 because I'm a little skeptical because of the low price...
It seems fine for a first one - I have a somewhat similar type at my GF's place and while it's not a Weller, it ain't all that bad either - The most important thing (besides it keeping temperature - which is variable here) is how well the tips hold up, but it seems that you can use generic tips (around 3mm in diameter). All in all, I'd say go for it and save some cash for other stuff.

You can get lots of parts from stripping defect/outdated consumer equipment, once more saving some hard cash.
Regards,
Søren

A rather fast and fairly heavy robot with quite large wheels needs what? A lot of power?
Please remember...
Engineering is based on numbers - not adjectives

okay I'm gonna think about it. I've had experience using this iron at school http://www.amazon.com/Weller-WLC100-Soldering-Hobbyist-Yourselfer/dp/B000AS28UC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1283850894&sr=8-1 and it truly is nice, and I just noticed that its only $44.99 so I might just dish out the money to get this one.. Sadly I've got about a month or two before I can order
