Guys, I want us to take a moment here to really appreciate what we have.

I just got bullied by mods over at LMR that seem to only care about hits and not about bringing the robots to the people. They busted my chops for posting half articles with link through's to my site claiming it was 'bad karma' and evil direct people away from LMR; when really I do it so i can keep all the comments of visitors form different sources in one place; instead of bouncing around trying to answer redundant questions. I mean, really? I do the same for posts here on SOR.

It made me realize how nice we have it here.

I'd say I'm older then most on SOR but still young enough to have grown up with the internet. I remember my first few forums through middle and high school. I was big into modding Xboxs and building computers. The forums for such topics were not fun places. Aggressive members quick to establish some sort of dominance over new member's lack of knowledge, and passive aggressive Moderators who would edit posts and signatures (and usually leave something negative and embarrassing) of those who were unaware of the rules; or even just disagreed with a Moderator's view.

We don't have any of that here. I know all the members of the community are to thank, but i'm also of firm belief that the moderator sets the mood of a forum.

John treats us well, and I want to make sure we all show our appreciation.

SOR may not be the biggest around, but IMHO it's definitely the friendliest.

The guys at Let's make Robots are really a$$....

Sorry for my language but we had something similar happening with us...

I started building electronics and robots with a subscription magazine, which had parts with each week release...

As a consequence an internet community started just like SOR with all us Greek - Geeks if I can call it so....
The community is over 7 years old aging back to 2003....

As it happens with a lot communities we had site, server and administrator problems... So approx. 3 years back we assembled again and started here http://www.grobot.gr/ ...

Then it happened that our admin posted a link to them, just a reference that here in humble Greece there are guys trying to build something too...

The result... We were so so so so badly flamed of copying them and being a bad site.... Being in fact a smaller but older community than them... That's ridiculous man.... We all build robots in our free time for fun, as a job or having future job expectations.... What the .... was that... That doesn't promote their site nor their character....

Really shame on them... That things are ridiculous... We have internet so that we share knowledge, learn & help and so on... And I don't have to be a hippie to believe these things...

P.S. I sure now that they will start posts over there like "SOR members flaming our community" and so on...
I'm not writing these to cause distress but some things must be discussed in public...

Glad to hear I wasn't alone in LMR abuse, but i'd rather keep this as a Homage to Admin for how awesome SOR is. I was just describing my LMR experience as why I felt motivated to start this thread.

So let's stay off LMR in any replies here please. We can start a LMR abuse support thread elsewhere.

I have to agree. SOR is the best forum/website around.

if you make a mistake with code or ask questions that other find obvious they do not shut you down, they do what they can to help.

Without SOR i would be doing robotics and i wouldnt be where i am today!

Before I found SoR my robotics knowledge wasn't past beem "robots" that didn't work and being able to under stand some JavaScript!

It's true. Admin really made this an awesome forum! Rather then criticize people for a lack of knowlege other members often contribute to the subject and i've learned allot more here then i have ever learned on other electronics sites. Try asking how to use a transister in most electronics and this is what it might look like

Ok I don't want to flame but wasn't LMR started by a guy from here anyway?

this forum and maybe sparkfun are the only robotics related forums I'm part of. This site does tend to get a lot of noobish questions and I look at them if I have time to try to help but thats what this site is for. The $50 robot is designed to lower the barrier to entry and I know I ask stupid noobish questions all the time. Some forums/groups tend to get clickish and those die off after a while because no new blood ever enters. SOR has new people showing up all the time and doing stuff right along side old timers who have done some amazing stuff in the past and will in the future. Now everyone buy an Axon to thank Admin

I feel Sparfun has it's share of trolls and bad mods as well, and i have heard the same from other people as well.

Blackbeard, I love it. I think you just summed up every post on the famous Xbox modding site I used to follow in high school 6 years ago.

One nice touch I've noticed here:
When folks ask the obligatory simple beginner question which has likely been answered a hundred times already, someone will type "Google is your friend", but then usually go ahead and type some additional helpful information too instead of just leaving them hanging. That is very rare. Kudos to the community.

the forums i find worse for this are general programming forums, such as cprogrammng.com they seem to throw it in your face that theyre smarter than you, but they've went to college. I'm just in high school

I agree wholeheartedly.  I am just getting started in electronic design and engineering (lots of electronic repair, computer, and programming experience) and have been researching for quite a while on what would be the best way to get into development as a hobby.  I decided on the Axon II for a mcu mostly because of the helpful members of SoR and Admin and his tutorials.

Well, I take it back. According to Google Trends SOR still has a bigger presence on the web then LMR does.

Guess we might be the biggest around.

and SOR is # 10 in most bookmarked for 'Robotics'. LMR is #20.

I remember a kinda huge robot forum but it's surely German or something like that...

SoR is a huge newbie society... That's not bad of course... Getting tired with Parallax forums and basically,
Basic Stamp I found... SOR!!! Plus the contests are such a great motive... Truly wish I had more time, but I feel like paper itch....

There are forums like AVR Freaks that you must know what the chicken you are asking... no noobing... But these can be extremely helpful places... And even if you are noobing, asking politely will lead always somewhere good....

There are forums with and for smart a$$e$... Well give me a break... these guys may know a thing or two... maybe more... but they don't really have a life... And these forums are just attractive to them...

I love SoR... even if I don't log everyday some times... It's part of my reality... Still I would really like to bring SoR to the next level... Let's say it, make it more competitive (In a good manner of course)....

So it would be nice if there was more connection of the forum to the member pages... I mean, the member pages hold many resources and surely is a place to read many things... But a more active approach would be to rate more, comment more... And ask more... The contests are very nice... But thing is sometimes, some nice projects can be forgotten...

So I propose a place in the main forum, preferably at the bottom, or anything else, where member projects are shown...
You know like recent projects, high rated projects and so on....

I know we stand more to an educational forum... But have a though about it... Sometimes... You need that little something to start the fire... ;-)
