Why do people use 555 timer chips all the time? A schmidtt trigger oscillator using a 74hc14 is simpler, cheaper, has 8 possible timers and runs at 5v so why do people use 555 timers?

A rather fast and fairly heavy robot with quite large wheels needs what? A lot of power?
Please remember...
