Not an easy item to build.

How old are the kids?
Is this for an educational program?
Are the kids building this?
If so then may I suggest building a light beam communication system. This only requires an LED that is modulated and a photocell connected to an audio amp.
Range can be greatly increased with a couple of lenses.

not really a robot but still a very interesting project. why not try ask.com? they are sure to have this sort of thing. if you do find anything on ask can you post a link because a walkie talkie would be a great project to try.
