AVR ISP Mk2 won't connect to my 50$ robot board

I've posted this question on an other thread but realized it isn't about the same problem.

My board is finished, AT mega 8 is in, batteries are in, no shorts. I've follewed the diagram to do all the connections (the one that duplicates a board with superposed circuits you can remove or add). THe wiring is made for a 6 pin ISP connection

I connected toe AVRISP M2 to the computer's USB and to the board with power on. 2 green leds turn on inside the ISP.

I open AVR Studio 4 (downloaded in 3 parts from the tutorial). I bring up the hold_servo .hex

System is in simulator/at mega 8. I try to select the AVR IPS Mk2 and USB in the connection menu (from the black icon in 2nd tool bar). The request is rejected. I can't connect.  The only way I can access the "program" window is by clicking "work out of connection"...wich doesn't get me far.


SOS...help... I need to continue and mod those servos!!!!

ok... found in an other post that new (2009) AVRISPMkII have a problem with the older versions of AVR studio 4 that is downloadable from the tutorial and that downloading strait from AVR solves that communication problem. Will try and see.

If you have other ideas... feel free to chime in!

ok... I updated the software with a download from the atmel website. right off, I could access the programming page... I then tried to upload the hold_sevo .hex file

I got the orange blinking light. The help menu said I've got a short on the MOSI or that I wired the ISP connection wrong.

I rechecked and , to me, all seems connected as per the diagram. I've check for shorts with the multimeter... no false connections. Frequency is 125mhz...

I thought I could progress today but it seems I need to fiddle some more before I get this robot rolling.

Going to see previous post about that orange ISP light... maybe something in there can help.

Edit: there was ibndeed a tuiny fleck of solder shorting the MOSI pin for the ISP. That was an easy fix. I also removed and resoldered my %v regulator and now all is ok. It was then easy to modif the 2 servos for 360 rotation.
